Michael
A. Paschall , ASA, CFA, JD, is a Managing Director
and Executive Vice President of the firm.
Paschall is an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) in
business valuation of the American Society of Appraisers, and is a Chartered
Financial Analyst (CFA). Prior
to joining Banister Financial, Paschall held positions in credit
analysis and trust investments for First Union National Bank (now
Wachovia Bank & Trust Company), where he
valued a wide variety of privately held companies and partnerships.
Paschall obtained a B.A. in English and Economics from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a J.D. from Wake
Forest University Law School.
A frequent speaker, Paschall is a guest lecturer at Wake Forest University School of Law and has spoken at the National Business Valuation Conference of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) and the National Trust Closely Held Business Association. Paschall also has spoken to numerous local, regional and statewide sections of various Bar Associations in the Southeast.
Paschall is co-author (along with George Hawkins of Banister Financial) of the CCH Business Valuation Guide. Published by CCH, Incorporated, one of the world's largest legal, tax and accounting publishers, this book is approximately 1,500 pages and is now in its eighth edition. The Guide provides a comprehensive treatment of complex business valuation issues facing attorneys, accountants, closely held business owners and investment banking professionals, and is supplemented annually. Paschall also serves as co-editor (with George Hawkins) of CCH Business Valuation Alert, a national business valuation newsletter published quarterly. Paschall has also authored articles on valuation topics for various publications, including Bar Association newsletters.
Paschall is qualified as an expert witness in business valuation in various state courts and arbitration matters and has been appointed as an independent appraiser by the courts. Paschall has been retained by the United States Justice Department to provide consulting expertise on business valuation issues in the healthcare industry.
Paschall is an Advisor to the International Board of Examiners (Business Valuation Section) of the American Society of Appraisers. This Board approves candidates for accreditation by reviewing submitted business valuation reports for technical competency. Prior to his current role as an Advisor, Paschall served as an Examiner for the Board of Examiners.

George
B. Hawkins, ASA, CFA, is the President, a Managing
Director and Founder of the firm.
Hawkins is an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) in
business valuation of the American Society of Appraisers, and is a Chartered
Financial Analyst (CFA).
Prior to founding Banister Financial, Mr. Hawkins served in
corporate lending, risk management, and credit analysis positions with Bank of America
(formerly NationsBank) and First Citizens Bank. Hawkins
obtained a B.A. in Economics from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill and a MBA from Wake Forest University.
Hawkins is a frequent speaker to leading national conferences on valuation issues in the areas of estate planning, family law, and other subjects, including the National Business Valuation Conference of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA), the National Business Valuation Conference of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Judicial Section of the American Bar Association, national conferences of the American Bar Association-American Law Institute, the National Trust Real Estate Association, and is a guest lecturer at the Wake Forest University School of Law. Hawkins also routinely addresses local, regional and statewide sections of various Bar Associations throughout the country, as well as other groups and institutions.

Hawkins is a qualified expert witness in business valuation in U.S. Tax Court, various state courts, the North Carolina Business Court, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and in arbitration hearings on issues including estates and gifts, divorce, dissenting shareholder litigation, business damages, and bankruptcy. Also, Hawkins has been appointed numerous times as an independent valuator by the courts in disputes and is routinely engaged jointly by opposing parties in valuation disputes. In addition, Hawkins has appeared before the Internal Revenue Service on taxation-related valuation issues, and has been retained by the United States Justice Department to value business interests in estate tax matters. Hawkins has also served as a special technical advisor to a United States Federal Magistrate on valuation issues.
Hawkins is an elected member of the Business Valuation Committee of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA), the governing body of the ASA’s business valuation discipline. He is head of the International Board of Examiners (Business Valuation Section) of the ASA, which approves candidates for accreditation by reviewing submitted business valuation reports for technical competency. Since 1994, Hawkins has also previously served as an Advisor and as an Examiner to the Board, and in 2001 was named the Examiner of the Year.

Gary R. Gerlach, ASA, CFA, CPA, is Senior Vice President of the firm. Gerlach is an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) in business valuation of the American Society of Appraisers, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). Gerlach is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and is also a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).
Prior to joining Banister Financial, Gerlach had extensive
experience in business valuation, public accounting and investigating
white collar financial crimes with the Federal Bureau of Investigation
in Washington, DC. Gerlach also served as a U.S. Army Ranger. Gerlach received a B.A. in political science from Bates
College and a MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill.
Gerlach has published a variety of articles on important business valuation issues and speaks to various organizations on contemporary issues. Besides having valued a wide variety of businesses in a large number of industry sectors, Gerlach possesses leading skills in the areas of family limited partnership and LLC valuations.
Gerlach has served as the Chairman of the Western North Carolina Branch of the American Society of Appraisers. Gerlach also serves as an Examiner on the International Board of Examiners of the American Society of Appraisers. This Board approves candidates for accreditation by reviewing submitted business valuation reports for technical competency. Gerlach is a lecturer and author on a wide variety of business valuation topics.
Gerlach is qualified as an expert witness in business valuation in state courts.
